Dr. William J. Shaw is a pastor, visionary, leader, and scholar. Pastor Shaw serves as the Board Chairman for Exodus to Excellence, Inc. with delight and commitment. Today, there is no issue more important to youth, parents, teachers, politicians, volunteers, and corporations than partnering to support youth empowerment via enhancing necessary skills to succeed in life. He believes we must continue to promote strong values and develop excellence while assisting our innovative youth in overcoming the “Digital Divide”. Pastor Shaw currently leads the congregation at White Rock Baptist Church of Philadelphia, PA.
Born in Marshall, Texas, he began serving the Lord at a young age. He was baptized at age seven; preached his first sermon at the extraordinary age of 11; was licensed to preach at age 12; served as supply pastor to his home church, New Bethel Baptist, at age 15; and was ordained as pastor of the Oak Hill Baptist Church in Harrison County, Texas at age 17. He was a high school valedictorian and is an alumnus of Bishop College, Union Theological Seminary, and Colgate Rochester Divinity School at Crozer Theological Seminary where he earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree with emphasis on Biblical Interpretation from the Black Perspective.
Pastor Shaw came to White Rock Baptist Church as a 21-year old seminary student in 1954. He joined the congregation and assisted the pastor, Reverend W.C. Williamson. When Reverend Williamson's health failed, Pastor Shaw became Acting Pastor. After Reverend Williamson's death in 1956, Pastor Shaw accepted the call to become White Rock's pastor.
Pastor Shaw is the former President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., one of the largest African American religious organizations in the country. His platform, VISA – Vision, Integrity, Structure, Accountability – forged a fundamental cultural change in all aspects of the Convention’s activities, operations, auxiliaries, and boards. VISA laid the foundation for the Convention to be Christ-centered by embracing Christ’s ministry of preaching, teaching, and healing. “Christ’s work is our work.”
Widely regarded throughout his life as an influential leader, Pastor Shaw currently serves on the Boards of The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, the Presbyterian Hospital Medical Center, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, Junior Achievement of Delaware Valley, Inc., and the United Way.
Past service has also included President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity, President of the Metropolitan Christian Council of Philadelphia, President of the Pennsylvania State Baptist Convention, Director of The Ministers Division of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, and Executive Director Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC).
